Prime Time
The 'retyring' generation

Overview

The generations born before the Second World War built their working careers on a sense of absolute duty and commitment. They created great industrial age organisations, and lived the ‘corporate man’ life without questioning. And they looked forward to retirement. After all it was ‘owed to them’ in return for the many years of loyal service.

However, much has changed, and the world is not as it used to be. The Industrial Age has given way to the Information Age, which in turn is beginning to make way for a new emerging Connection Economy. And as a new generation - the Baby Boomers - now approach 60, the traditional thinking suggests that they should also drift off into the ‘retirement sunset’.

Boomers have always been fueled by great dreams: the pursuit of something different and better. And so as they contemplate ‘life after 60’ new dreams begin to emerge that are fundamentally different from traditional perspectives. They are relatively younger, life expectancy is longer, costs of living / medical care is escalating, and above all they don’t want to stop contributing. They've earned more money than they had expected to, but they're in more debt than they should be. They're still a hugely powerful consumer force (research shows that in most countries they control over 60% of the wealth, mainly due to recently escalated property values).

Boomers are set to revolutionise ‘life after 60’ and with it launch a new stage of life that has not existed before. This ‘silver market’ is a golden opportunity - internally and externally in organisations. They have levels of education, talent, energy, drive and material means that will not be contained. They may also spring some surprises as they seek to make amends for the opportunities they were too busy to see previously.

All it will take is a little direction and some self belief - something they have never been short of - to do what they have always wanted to really do, and live their dreams.

This will have a profound impact on:

  • organisations who wrestle with the loss of a wise and talented work force – particularly as the average age of many professionals increases
  • marketers who will discover a whole new market of needs - financial planners who discover that previous paradigms of retirement planning fast become obsolete
  • communities who discover a fiercely demanding new generation of residents who challenge, demand and re-invent post-60 living.

Practical Business Applications

In addition to the keynote presentation, Graeme works with a team at TomorrowToday, the global consultancy he co-founded, to apply "Prime Time" to various business areas. The following is a list of specific applications that have been developed by the team. These are adapated for each specific client and functional area that we work with:

Related Presentations

Either as a follow up to "Prime Time", or as stand alone presentations, the following are related in content and approach:

  • Mind the Gap - the generation gap; why younger and older people have such different expectations and approaches to life, leadership, work and relationships. Understand and more effectively connect with staff, clients, family and friends. Understand why other people are like they are, and why they act as they do.
  • Winning the Talent Wars - In the global war for talent, companies have discovered that a new generation of "bright young things" seems to have the upper hand. Asking more, giving less, moving more often and generally giving their managers a headache, these young people are nevertheless vital to most companies' success and future. This presentation or workshop explains why today's talent think and act as they do, and provides seven keys into what your company can do to create an attractive culture that not only retains them, but energises and motivates them, too. It encourages an important mindset shift for all companies that are battling with staff turnover, and for those that have identified the need to get - and keep - talented staff as a critical priority.
  • "Hannah's Rules": The Rise of the Ethical Consumer - the impact that a new generation of consumers will have on business as they care less and less about what you sell, and more and more about who you are and how you sell, and strategies to connect with them before your competitors do.
