Matt, your idea is definitely one the retail world is pursuing. In essence, this is what many retailers do already by offering rewards and discounts through their loyalty schemes. Loyalty cards track in store and online purchasing behaviour, but could easily be extended to capture other activity too. I am certain that most people from the younger generations would be very happy to exchange data about themselves for both some reward and just better service from their favourite retailers.

I think your thinking is spot on.

What if an application asked customers to willingly give their data/purchases made/future buying intentions etc. And then compensated customers when their data is sold to the retailers/
Why this idea is not implemented? Your thoughts about it please/

Lise, I did note in the version I created that I had copied the idea from "a Facebook status that was doing the rounds" (i.e. had gone viral). The work I did on adapting it to South Africa was all my own. I hope this was all clearly noted in the original, but thanks for sending me this link to CNN's website.

Volker, your question is important. And the answer is one I am constantly trying to improve. I travel a lot in a year, and work hard to ensure that my travel is all carbon neutral. I buy carbon credits for every mile I travel - regardless of the mode of travel. I specifically do this for plane travel using two different carbon credits - my favourite being buying trees to be planted in South African townships.

It is impossible for anyone to reduce their impact on the planet to zero. But we all have to make decisions that either minimise or mitigate the effects we do have.

For example, I becoming more and more concerned about how much energy it takes to create beef. I think it will not be long before I need to stop eating beef. For those who know me, and know that I am South African, they will know that this is a HUGE lifestyle change for me. But I think it needs to be made.

Thanks for the question. I hope the answer makes sense.
